Reading and Phonics - Gray's Farm Primary Academy

Reading and Phonics

  • Reading is key for all children and will be set at least 3 times per week. This will include children listening to someone reading to them (whilst sometimes following the text on a screen).

  • Accelerated Reader alongside MyOn is used as a tool to monitor engagement in KS2. We are able to set books based on the children’s ability and their interest level to ensure engagement.

  • Children in KS1 and Reception have access to daily reading via Bug Club where the books are set on the child’s ability and are regularly checked by the teacher. Bug Club also provides an additional quiz/fun element to ensure comprehension skills are progressing.

  • A differentiated daily live phonics session is taught to those children in Reception and KS1 who will benefit from this.  Additional phonics videos (from Read Write Inc which are carefully pitched at the accurate level) are shared with children in Reception and Year 1 to support their learning even further.

  • Reading will continue to be celebrated with a weekly Reading Assembly which will be shared with the children. Please see below to see some examples of our ‘Lock Down’ Reading assemblies.
