This week at Gray's Farm - W/B 9th January

Week Beginning: 9th January 2022

NURSERY

Now we have settled into Spring term 1, we will continue to focus this week on Polar Bears and thief habitat. We will be encouraging the children to take part in an ice experiment (Ice excavation). If you log into tapestry this week, there will be an investigation that you can carry out with your child along with some questions. 

RECEPTION

This week we are continuing with our topic of Winter by looking at animals that hibernate and those that don't. We will then extend that by thinking about why animals who live in colder climates do not hibernate. In Maths we are finding number bonds to numbers within 5 (2, 3 & 4) so that we can be expert at recalling our bonds to 5 without needing to count!

YEAR 1

In English, we are going to look at a new book called 'Katie in London'. We are going to sort facts about some of the famous landmarks and write a diary entry.

In Maths, we are going to group concrete objects into 2s, 5s and 10s using manipulatives and organise them into arrays.

YEAR 2

This week we are revisiting addition and subtraction, but we are starting to calculate with numbers that cross boundaries. 

I’m English, we are looking at a new story about a wombat which links with our topic on Australia. 

PE days are Monday and Wednesday. 

YEAR 3

This week in Year 3, we will be continuing with our story ‘There’s a Snake in my School’ and beginning to rewrite our own stories. In maths, we will be continuing our work on the four operations with a focus on addition. In Geography we will be learning all about France and what it’s like to live there. 

YEAR 4

This week in English, we will be starting a new book linked to our Geography topic - Nordic Countries. Our skill focus for the week will be different types of noun phrases. 

This week in Maths, we will be revisiting adding and subtracting from the Autumn Term. We will also be having an indepth focus on multi-step problems when adding and subtracting to identify what steps and methods would be needed. 

Reminder: 4 Yew are restarting their swimming tomorrow (10th January). 

YEAR 5

This Week in Year 5, we are starting a new book called, ‘Swimming with Sharks’. We will be using this to create a non-fiction text. In Maths, we will be revisiting formal calculation. In Geography, we are studying the biomes of Northern America. In Science, we will be investigating how to separate mixtures.

YEAR 6

This week, we will be learning what the different symbols mean in an electrical circuit. We will be investigating how to make a simple circuit and explain what is stopping one from working. 

In our English book - The Last Bear - our main character , April, has arrived on Bear Island and begins her days of exploring. We will be using ideas from the story to help us write in role.
