Week Beginning: 23rd January 2023

NURSERY

Our new story for this week is called 'Whatever Next'. It is about a bear that goes exploring and uses his imagination as he flies to the moon. Children will have the opportunity to act out the story and use their pre-writing skills to make lists of things they may need for the trip to the moon.The children will have the opportunity to explore science books and find out about space and planets.

Don’t forget to check the board outside the nursery for daily updates. 

RECEPTION

This week in Reception the children are continuing with their topic around 'Space' and 'Light & Dark'. They will be using the story of the Alien Tea Party to help them create and write their own Alien menu. They will also be exploring Light & Dark through animals that come out in the day time and animals that come out at night. In Maths, the children will be finding one less than a given number.

Don't forget.....our PE day is on a Thursday so please send your child dressed in their PE kit! Details of appropriate clothing can be found on the website but please feel free to ask one of the team if you are unsure! Many thanks.

YEAR 1

In Maths, we are going to measure length and height using non-standard units, such as hand span, cubes and steps. We will also be solving addition word problems. Towards the end of the week, we will be looking at capacity and how to use words like full, empty, more than, less than, half full and quarter full.

In English, we will be looking at 'The Tale of the Welsh Dragon'. We will be sequencing pictures from the story to understand the events. We will be looking at emotive language throughout our role play. We will also be writing main clause with noun phrases, ie. The red dragon was the strongest and the most powerful dragon in the village.

YEAR 2

This week, Year 2 will starting a new book called 'Rainbow bird' for our English. In Maths, we will be learning about fractions of amounts. Our Curriculum lessons will be: continuing our learning about Australia, in Geography, and we will be investigating floating and sinking in Science.

YEAR 3

This week in English, we will be reading the book Into the Forest. We will be developing our use of time adverbials and will be using them when writing our own story endings. Within maths, now that we have finished looking at the four operations, we will be moving on to fractions and fractions of amounts. In Geography we will be looking at another European country; Spain. We will be exploring favourite foods, festivals and much more! Please remember to read every day and make sure that your reading record is signed. 

YEAR 4

In Maths this week, we will be looking at fractions. We will be focusing on equivalent fractions, fractions of amounts using money and measure and how to solve word problems. 

In English this week, we will be continuing with our 'OKtapodi' video clip. We will be focusing on fronted adverbials e.g. how, when and where, retelling the story and starting to introduce the children to editing and improving their work. 

YEAR 5

This week in Year 5, we are continuing with our class book, Windrush Child and continuing to improve our descriptive language skills. In Maths, we are revisiting fractions and our confidence in ordering, simplifying and adding and subtracting them. We will also be revisiting mixed and improper fractions again. In Science, we will be conducting an experiment to see whether temperature affects the rate that something dissolves. In Geography, we will be learning all about Cuba! 

YEAR 6

This week, we will be looking for ways to keep our siblings out of our belongings by making a 'sibling keep out burglar alarm'. We will be using our knowledge of circuits and conductors of electricity to help us do this.
