Graysgeneric

Week Beginning: 17th April 2023

NURSERY

Welcome back after the Easter break. For the next few weeks we shall be exploring the story of the Bad tempered ladybird. It talks about feelings and the importance of friendship.

The children shall be observing the life cycle of ladybirds as  we shall be getting real lava and watching carefully each stage of the cycle until adulthood before we release it to the wild.

Please check the board outside our nursery gate for further updates.

RECEPTION

Welcome to the summer term!  And what a busy first half term we have planned!  In Reception this week the children are beginning a new topic around life cycles and will be looking at the life cycle of a duck and a frog.  We will hopefully be hatching our own duck eggs and would like to hatch some baby frogs, so if anyone has any frogspawn in their garden pond we would be very grateful for it! Please contact the school office or speak to one of the team on the gate if you can help. We will also be doing lots of planting in our outdoor area and learning how to care for the plants that we grow.

In Maths, we are practising our measuring skills and how to measure accurately with different units of measure.

YEAR 1

Welcome back, we hope you have had a lovely break.

This week, in English, we are going to look at a new class book, 'Tilda tries again'. We are going to think about what we feel is challenging in our lives and how we can overcome it. We are going to write a diary entry explaining the challenges using main clauses and what strategies we can use to make us feel better.

In Maths, we are counting in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s in the context of money. We are going to add amounts using coins and write them as repeated additions.

YEAR 2

In Maths, we are recapping using the expanded column method to add and subtract. As well as looking at missing number questions using the same methods.

In English, we are introducing a new book about climate change, called 'Greta and the Giants'. Our focus this week is using the conjunctions 'or' and 'that'.

Our topic for Geography this term is climate change and in science we are looking at life cycles of humans and animals.

YEAR 3

In Year 3, we are very excited to be starting our swimming lessons after the Easter holidays! As well as this, we will be beginning our topic in Science of animals! We will be learning about the skeleton and diet of animals, including humans. This week will see us explore why a balanced diet is important for the body. Please remember to bring your food diary into school Monday. Finally, in English we will be starting a new book 'George's Marvellous Medicine' which we are very excited about!

YEAR 4

Welcome Back! We hope you all have a restful break!

This week in English, we will be focusing on different types of noun phrases as our skill for the week. We will be retelling the start and the middle of Hansel and Gretel and our book focus for the next two weeks.

This week in Maths, we will be focusing on place value. Our skill for the week will be focusing on counting up and down in negative numbers, finding the difference between numbers including negative numbers and solving problems using negative numbers.

In Geography this half term, we will be focusing on the key question - How destructive can water be?

In Science this half term, we will be focusing on the key question - Where does our food go?

YEAR 5

This week in Year 5, in Maths, we will be continuing our work on measurement to ensure we are confident with translation and scaling. In English, we will be improving our speech punctuation as we resume reading our book, Anglo-Saxon Boy. In Geography, we will be exploring the water cycle (which links into our overall topic: river!). In Science, we will be looking at the gestation periods of different mammals as we begin to explore our new topic 'What happens to a human as it ages?'

YEAR 6

As of Monday 17th April, we have 14, yes that's right, 14 school days until our brilliant year sixes start their official SATs week. With that in mind, we will be continuing our revision in maths, which is based on where the children feel they need a quick recap. In SPaG, we will continue to develop our knowledge of the correct terminology used in writing and in reading we will still be analysing different genres. Obviously, our favourite PE lessons will continue on Mondays and Fridays as well as that well-earned 30 minute Friday afternoon freetime.
