Week Beginning: 27 January 2020

NURSERY

The nursery will continue the topic based on the story “Dear Zoo” . Children will be exploring patterns and grouping animals according to size. Letters have gone out today regarding our animal jungle party on Thursday and we can not wait to see the children’s  animal costumes.

RECEPTION

This week in Reception we are continuing with our theme on Supertato and reading the book 'Supertato - Veggies in the Valley of Doom!'. We will be continuing to talk about different foods and which are healthy or unhealthy. We will also be looking at how we can be superheroes ourselves and help our environment by putting our rubbish in the bin, recycling and turning off the lights! As part of this we will be talking about materials and making pictures out of plastic. In Maths we are learning to subtract 1 less and moving onto subtracting single digit numbers. In Phonics we are learning the sounds ar, or and ur (car, fork, burn).

YEAR 1

In English, we are going to look at a new story linked to Wales, The Tale of the Welsh Dragon. We are going to write noun phrases describing the characters and the setting. At the end of the week, we are going to use main clauses to rewrite the story.

In Maths, we are going to compare and measure length and height. Towards the end of the week, we are going to solve calculation problems involved length.

YEAR 2

This week in Maths, we will be relooking at different measures. We will be focusing on reading scales in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s and comparing different measurements.

This week in English, we will be using imperative (bossy) verbs to explain how we could save our planet.

YEAR 3

In Maths we will be counting up and down in tenths. Finding and writing fractions of an amount.

In English we will be working on using fronted adverbials ( when, where something was happening) in our descriptive writing.

YEAR 4

This week in year 4, we will be exploring fractions. We will be learning about equivalent fractions which are related to halves, quarters, eighths, thirds and sixths. The children will explore these fractions using manipulative as well as standard written forms. They will use fractions to problem solves and find fractions of amounts.

In English, we are exploring persuasive language. We will be debating what would make an extraordinary pet. The children will be given the option of picking their own bizarre pet and persuading their audience for why this pet would make the best companion.

A polite reminder that this Friday 31st January is an inset day, so the school will be shut for the children.

Please don’t forget that 4 Yew’s class assembly is on Tuesday morning at 9.05am. We hope to see you there.

YEAR 5

English: children will be continuing their work around the Amazon Rainforest. They will be writing a letter to David Attenborough about how they can make small changes to help the planet.

Maths: children will be continuing their work around fractions. They will be looking at how to multiply fractions. Extra support on quick fire times tables at home will help this.

Science: They will be starting an investigation to see whether a new plant will grow from cuttings.

YEAR 6

This week in Year 6, we will be creating our own investigation into how the light source position affects the size and position of a shadow. In geography, we will be writing a travel guide of Argentina.
