RECEPTION

At Gray's Farm this week, the whole school is participating in a DT project. In reception, this means that we will be designing and making puppets!

In maths, we will be focusing on shapes. We will be naming, describing and comparing 2d (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, pentagon and hexagon)  and 3d shapes (sphere, cube, cuboid, pyramid, cone and cylinder).

We will be learning about festivals and will read non-fiction books about Chinese New Year and St Valentine and will talk about what festivals we celebrate with our families.

In phonics, we will be learning the sounds ow (as in snow), ear and air.

We noticed that fewer children read at home last week...please ensure that your child reads at home for 10 minutes everyday - we really cannot emphasise enough what a difference it makes to their progress! Speaking of progress...Monday 10th February is Open Afternoon and you are invited into school from 2pm to look at your child's writing book. We are so proud of the progress they are making with their writing and would love you to come and see for yourselves - they are little stars.

Please remember that Friday is the last day of this half term and the children will be back in school on Tuesday 25th February. We hope you have a relaxing holiday!

YEAR 1

In Year 1, we have a very busy week again!

In Maths, we will be looking at 2D shapes and their properties. We will be using feely bags to explore shape and will make 2D shapes to really familiarise ourselves with how many vertices and edges a shape has.

In English, we will be using the story 'Monkey See, Monkey Do' to engage us in writing. We will be retelling the story through role-play and have the opportunity to plan and write the story too.

YEAR 2

This week in Maths, we will be looking at geometry. The focus will be 3D shapes and their properties. We will be using keywords such as; edges, faces and vertices. I wonder what 3D shapes you have around your house?

This week in English, we will be writing based on our Curriculum topics this half term. For our Science write up, we will be writing about our favourite investigation, explaining why and using our key vocabulary. In our Geography write up, we will be choosing where we would rather live - the UK or Australia and linking it to climate. Where would you rather live?

YEAR 3

In English we are using the skills we have learnt this term to write a leaflet and to write up a science experiment.

In Maths we are looking at different types of graphs and 3d shapes.

YEAR 4

In English this week we will be using our deduction and retrieval skills to look into a character description and write in a role. We are also going to be combining our writing and RE skills  to explain why Jesus is important to Christians.

In Maths we will be learning about the properties of shape and how to use symmetry in a mathematical context.

Swimming will be on Monday Morning for 4 Sycamore and Thursday afternoon for 4 Yew.

4 Sycamore also have their class assembly on Tuesday Morning at 9 am. Parents and carers are welcome.

YEAR 5

In English, we are continuing our writing about the discovery of a new species of frog in Mexico. We will be writing a newspaper article to explain the strange phenomenon using all of our writing skills. In Maths, we will be working out missing angles in triangles and looking at pie charts for the first time.

During the afternoons, we are very excited to begin our week of DT! We will all be learning how to sew, using a variety of stitches to create our own bookmark!

YEAR 6

This week in Year 6, we will be writing a newspaper article based on our class book in English and in maths, we will be practising our reasoning skills. We are looking forward to completing our DT projects.
