This week at Gray's Farm - W/B 05/10

Week Beginning: 05 October 2020

NURSERY

The Selfish Crocodile will be our new story.

Topic this week children will be learning about how we can be kind and share resources. We will be focusing on healthy eating and sampling some tasty snacks in our Cookery Club.  

Please check tapestry for your child’s individual next steps that you can work on at home. 

RECEPTION

This week, we will be learning all about minibeasts! We will be exploring the woodland area again this week and searching for minibeasts in their habitats. We will be using magnifying glasses to look closely at insects and recording information. In English, this week will be using our new storybook 'Superworm' to really engage us in our writing. We will be writing initial sounds and creating wizard lizard potions- how exciting?! In Maths, we will be working on counting and number recognition. We will be making our very own modelling minibeasts and counting their legs.

What a fun week we have ahead of us!

YEAR 1

In Maths, Year 1 will be learning to subtract - first, using objects and then using the symbols '-', '='. For example:: 5 cubes take away 2 cubes equals 3 cubes, 5 - 2 = 3.

In English we will continuing to describe characters in a story, using adjectives.

YEAR 2

This week in Writing, we will be looking at a new book linked to Harvest Festival called 'It's a No Money Day'. We will be focusing on joining 2 clauses using the 'but' conjunction. 

In Maths, we will be moving on to division. We will start the week with practically sharing cubes equally and moving onto drawing arrays into our books. 

In Science this week, we will be looking at the key question: What does an organism need from its habitat? We will be investigating taking away a variable from a plant to answer our key question. 

In Geography, we will be looking at climate zones using our continent knowledge and weather knowledge from previous weeks. 

YEAR 3

In Maths we will be working on subtraction, solving problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value and more complex subtraction problems.

In English we will be focusing on using commas in a list and using the correct punctuation in our writing. 

YEAR 4

This week in our English writing, we will be concentrating on using subordinate clauses within sentences and then paragraphs. The children will be using their previous knowledge on main clauses and sentence structure to complete their work. 

In Maths we are revising subtraction methods when calculating Money and numbers with decimal points. The children will complete challenges based on their underlying knowledge of the operation. 

Within our science lesson we will be writing our conclusions to the 'Egg Experiment' we started last week to try and find out how toothpaste protects the enamel on our teeth. 

YEAR 5

This week in Year 5, we are sharpening our multiplication skills in maths. In English we will be learning about  the features of a newspaper article. This week's science we are continuing to learn about the phases of the moon.

YEAR 6

In literacy, we are beginning our journey into the unknown where magic and mystery take hold.

We are continuing to learn about how and why Orpinton has changed over the last one hundred years.
