This week at Gray's Farm - W/B 15th September
Week beginning: 15th September
Nursery
This week in nursery our topic is “ I am unique “ we will be discussing our likes and dislikes . And comparing our self’s to our peers and adults, How are you different? Are there any similarities?
Our book for the week is “ what makes me a me ?”
For maths will be singing number nursery rhymes and making ABBA patterns using natural resources.
Reception
In Reception Class this week we will continue to look at Ourselves and Our School, we shall be looking at further areas within the school so the children can become even more familiar with their new setting.
Our phonics is going well, by now you would have had a pack of phonic cards. Please practice these at home. At present we have visited and learnt the sounds m,a,s,d,t.
Each day the children will have a new sound to learn.
In maths we will be exploring more number recognition and counting.
This week we will begin to collect kind donations from you to go towards our Harvest Festival Celebration. More details to follow.
Year 1
This week, in English, Year 1 will be reading The Leaf Thief. We will be writing main clauses, using adjectives and nouns. In Maths, we will be adding two groups of objects together using the + and = symbols. Please remember to read with your child every day and sign their reading records (they love getting their stickers). Phonics books will be changed on Thursday. PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you for your continued support.
Year 2
Year 3
In Maths, we are going to consolidate the expanded column method to add two and three digit numbers together. This method was taught in Year 2. Towards the end of the week, we are going to learn the compact method of how to add number sentences.
In English, we are going to look at a new book called 'The Lost Thing'. We are going to use adjectives to describe the thing. We are also going to use a variety of conjunctions: so, and, but to join main clauses. Towards the end of the week, we are going to make our own thing. To help with this project, we are looking for recycling materials: empty bottles, bottle caps, cardboard, egg cartons, kitchen towel tubes, etc. to be sent in with the children from Monday 15th September.
Year 4
This week in year 4, children will be continuing to write expanded noun phrases. We have been working hard to use strong vocabulary and are looking at ways of building and improving on our writing. In maths, the children will be beginning to round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand, and explaining our reasoning. In science we will continue to learn how to classify living things and in geography we will be looking at how the climate is different at the equator and the tropics.

Year 5
This week in Year 5, we are continuing our work around place value in maths by estimating numbers on a number line, ordering negative numbers and partitioning. We will also be adding and subtracting numbers including decimals using appropriate strategies. In English, we will be identifying and improving descriptive language using the text The Lost Happy Endings as a writing stimulus. We are continuing to look at time zones around the world in geography and we will be comparing animal life-cycles in science.
Year 6
This week in year six, we will be analysing the text - The Red Tree, where we will develop our understanding of modal verbs. In addition to this, we will be identifying different modal verbs and the effect they have on a sentence. In Geography, we are looking out how trade connects the UK to other countries.
