This week at Gray's Farm - W/B 6th January

Week beginning: 6th January
Nursery
When we return in January, we will be embarking on another nature walk. We will be focusing on our environment and exploring woodland animals. We will also be reading and retelling the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood.
Reception
Welcome back, we hope you had a great festive break.
This week in Reception Class we are exploring the Winter season and all that it brings. Looking at the changes within the Season e.g temperature, clothing and how we can stay warm.
In maths we will explore numbers within 10 e.g. one more, one less than a given number recognising and ordering numbers, solving mathematical problems as well as using vocabulary associated with ordinal numbers.
This week your child will be in their new phonic groups. They will be bringing home their books every Friday for you to support your child at home.
Year 1
In English, our writing will be based on the storybook, 'The Girl at the Front of the Class'. Children will be using emotive language and writing their own letters on how to be a good friend.. In Maths, we will be working with numbers upto 20 and solving addition and subtraction problems.
Year 2
Happy New Year! We hope you all have had a lovely Christmas.
Year 2 this week will be starting a new book called, The Girl at the Front of the Class. We'll be retelling the first half of the book by the end on the week. In Maths, we'll be revisiting place value and having a look at place value in money. Our Geography topic this term is 'Where would you rather live?' and our Science topic is 'Why do materials matter?'.
Year 3
Happy New Year and welcome back!
In English, we are going to look at a book across the whole school 'The Girl at the Front of the Class'. We are going to write an instruction on how to help someone when they are sad.
In Maths, we are going to look at place value, ordering and sequencing numbers.
Our Science topic is 'What is deep beneath our feet? (rocks and soils)
Our Geography topic is 'What is it like in Europe?'
Year 4
On our return to school, Year 4 will be reading and writing about the book The Girl at the Front of the Classroom by Onjali Q Rauf. We will be discussing refugees and giving advice on how to help a new person in the class. In PSHE we will be beginning our new topic of Health and Wellbeing, learning about how to keep ourselves and our bodies safe.
Year 5
This week in Year 5, we will be using the whole school book 'The Girl at the Front of the Class' as a writing stimulus. We will be using emotive language to write in the role as a character and will use powerful vocabulary to describe a character's appearance and feelings. In maths, we will be solving a variety of calculation problems involving mixed and improper fractions. In science, we are learning how levers and pulleys help to make lifting and moving heavy objects easily and safely and will be using our investigation skills to infer how and why the Maya civilisation ended.
Year 6
Happy New Year to you all. This week, the children will receive their spellings for this half term. Please could you help them to learn them - there will be weekly mini spelling tests on a Thursday afternoon (this will be on the first two spellings from each column) and a main one in the final week of term. In Geography, we will be researching the continent of South America by identifying the different countries, the surrounding bodies of water and the population. During our writing lessons, we will be using the whole school text - The Girl at the Front of the Class, where we will be showing empathy and showing kindness and understanding to children who are refugees.
