Week Beginning: 15th January 2024

NURSERY

This week in nursery our topic will be “our pets” this is following the children’s lead as they have shown an interest in animals due to last weeks book. Some of them have already shared some information about their own pets and we will now extend this. 

We will be helping the children to understand having a pet brings responsibility,compassion and trust.

In maths we will be looking at positional language and revisiting number recognition 1-10.

RECEPTION

This week in Reception we shall continue our topic on space and the solar system with particular reference to light and dark, may we please ask you to bring in any small cardboard boxes or kitchen tubes as we will be making space stations as part of our DT session.  

In maths we will be looking at one more or one less than a given number.  Please continue to practise your sounds, blending  or ditty sheets at home.

YEAR 1

In Maths this week, Year 1 will be subtracting a one digit number from a 1 or 2 digit number and adding a one digit number to a 1 or 2 digit number by drawing the number sent as well as using a number line.  In English, Year 1 will be looking at the story of Katie Morag who lives in Scotland.  We will be sorting facts and writing main clauses using verbs, adjectives and nouns.  Towards the end of the week, we will be writing a fact sheet.

Don't forget PE is Wednesday and Thursday.

YEAR 2

In Maths, Year 2 will be using manipulatives and arrays to solve multiplication and division questions. In English, we will be starting a new book called 'Possum Magic' and will be using our conjunctions to write sentences. In Science, we will be investigating which substance makes the best glue and in Geography, we will be learning about Australia and where it is in the world. 

YEAR 3

Next week, Year 3 will be starting a new book called Into the Woods. We will be looking at descriptive language and how we can up level our sentences. In maths, we will be learning a new method for multiplication which helps us solve more complex number problems. Please remember to sign and send in your child’s reading record every day. 

YEAR 4

In Maths this week, we will be multiplying and dividing. We will be moving onto a new method for multiplying: expanded column methods and we will be continuing with chunking when dividing. 

In English this week, we will be using a short video clip. Our skill for the week will be subordinating conjunctions with a bigger focus on the conjunction at the beginning of the sentence and not forgetting our comma! 

Reminder - it's PJ day on Thursday and we are swimming still! Please wrap up extra warm and wear appropriate footwear e.g. trainers. 

YEAR 5

This week in Year 5, we are looking at a new book 'Swimming with Sharks'. We will be using the information to write our own biography about Dr. Eugenie Clark. In maths, we will be continuing with our focus on calculation by focusing on multiplication and division. In science, we will be looking at the different methods we can use to separate mixtures. In geography, we will be looking at the biomes of North America.

YEAR 6

This week, we will be investigating what happens in a circuit when we add more than one bulb. We will be predicting and discussing how to make this a fair test.  In Geography, we will be exploring how the climate varies across South American whilst looking for any similarities within the climate of the UK. During writing, we will be looking at different character's viewpoints. Our writing skills are to secure our knowledge of modal verbs and apostrophes.
