Week Beginning: 17 May 2021

NURSERY

Following on from the interest of the children, our new story topic this week is called "The Billy Goats Gruff"

We shall be sharing the story and using resources and props to retell the sequence of events.

The children will be looking and comparing size, ordering troll numbers and constructing bridges using different materials.

If you have any small junk boxes at home we could use we shall leave a large container at the nursery gate for box donations.

RECEPTION

This week in Reception we will be exploring the story ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle. We will be thinking about what seeds are and what happens to them (and what we need to do to make them grow). We will be doing lots of planting of vegetables and flowers this week and observing the changes as our plants grow. We’ll also be looking at the season ‘Spring’ and what happens in this season.

In Maths, we will be ordering objects by size and measuring using non standard units e.g how many cubes long is the pencil? We will be using language such as taller, shorter, tallest, shortest, longer, longest.

YEAR 1

In English we will be finishing off our book The Storm Whale, comparing Noi's life at the end of the book to at the beginning, working on our punctuation and building up to writing a series of sentences. In maths we will be solving addition problems with 1 and 2 digit numbers which total up to 20. This will include using coins to show their answers. We also need small cardboard boxes to turn into vehicles for the last week of term. So that they are quarantined in time, if you have some, please send them in by THURSDAY. Many thanks.

YEAR 2

In Writing this week, we will be continuing to apply our +ed spelling rules to verbs. The children have found CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) tricky when identifying their consonants and vowels to double the final consonant before adding their ed e.g. jog = jogged and if the verb changes completely e.g. fall = fell so we will be focusing on these rules in particular next week. Our Writing outcome for the week will be to write a letter to the caterpillar apologising for changing which is linked to our science topic and learning about life cycles.

In Maths this week, we will be focusing on money. We will be looking at finding different ways to make the same amount and seeing if we can just use silver or bronze coins and what's the least amount of coins we could use. We will also be using our calculation methods to recap on our adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

YEAR 3

In year 3 we are learning about using conjunctions with a main clause and in maths we are learning about fractions. In science, we were looking at what materials were magnetic and if we spotted a pattern. In geography, we were looking at why people live near volcanoes.

YEAR 4

This week, in Maths, we will be solving comparison, sum and difference problems using graphs.  In English, we will be using persuasive language to write a letter to our future selves about water conservation, using our knowledge taught in Geography.

YEAR 5

This week in Year 5 we will be using our knowledge of the water cycle to write a descriptive poem about a raindrop. In maths, we are converting units of measure, including time, and will be solving real-life problems. This is our final week of our Science and Geography topics and we are looking forward to combining all of our learning in our writing.

YEAR 6

This week, we will be looking at the plight of the orang-utan in the Rainforest and the effect that deforestation and Palm oil has on its habitat.

In science, we will be classifying trees found in our local environment.

If you have a small box, please bring it into school by Thursday as we will be using them in DT.
