This week at Gray's Farm - W/B 31/01

Week Beginning: 31st January 2022

NURSERY

This week sees the beginning of Chinese New Year. In the nursery we will be learning about the story of Chinese New Year, making lanterns, dragons and looking at patterns,  through music and movement we will be  expressing ourselves using silk scarves and red and gold ribbons. Towards the end of the week the children will have the opportunity to make fruit kebabs as part of our DT week. Please check the notice board by the nursery gate for updates and more info.

RECEPTION

In Reception this week, the children will be finding out all about Chinese New Year. They will be tasting fortune cookies and writing their own good fortune messages. They will also be making their own cookies to take home with their messages. They will be taking part in a dragon dance. In Maths, the children will be learning to find the total of two groups of objects by counting all of the objects together (known as aggregation).

YEAR 1

In English, we are going to look at the irish legend of Finn McCool and how the Giant Causeway was created in Northern Ireland. We will write main clauses to retell the story of Finn and another giant, Benandonner.

In Maths, we are going to compare the weight and mass of different objects practically. We will also use the the language light, lighter, heavy, heavier and equal to describe mass.

Towards the end of the week, we will solve word problems involving weight.

YEAR 2

In Writing this week, we will be finishing our book 'Rainbow Bird'. This week we will be focusing on word classes (adjectives, nouns, verbs and adverbs). We will be finishing the week by using our word classes when writing a diary entry. 

In Maths this week, we will be focusing on 2D and 3D shapes. We will be focusing on looking at their properties, using the keywords: edges, vertices and faces. 

YEAR 3

In Year 3 this week we will be practising our division skills and trying out a new method to help us solve more challenging number problems. In English we will be watching a short film and writing some amazing persuasive pieces!  As well as this, we will be looking at sun safety in Science and holding a class debate. 

YEAR 4

In Maths this week, Year 4 will be interpreting discrete and continuous data using the appropriate graphical methods including tables and bar charts.  Our focus in English this week will be modified expanded noun phrases and recapping on how to correctly use conjunctions.  

We will continue our Geography topic focusing on Finland.

YEAR 5

This week in Year 5 we are looking forward to writing about a little girl and the strange things that happen to her ( we are keeping the rest a secret!). In Maths, we will be learning how to add, subtract and multiply fractions! Science this week will  be carrying out our investigation into whether plants can grow from cuttings. We will be continuing to decide where we would rather live by looking at Canada in our Geography lesson and in RE we will be learning how Christians and Jewish people take responsibility for their actions

YEAR 6

This week in year six, we will be learning about the different biomes found in South America. We will also be researching the largest South American country - Brazil.

During our science lesson, we will investigate how periscopes help us see and the benefits of them in previous wars.
